📢 Google is stepping up its game with a new search experience.

🌐 Introducing “Google Search Generative Experience” (SGE)

🆕 Rollouts began on May 25 for US users.

🤖🔎 Get ready for more than just search results: Google’s “Search Labs” will also be available.

⚗️ To be among the first to try it out, join the waiting list .

👥 Unveiled at Google I/O 2023, SGE combines conversational AI with the traditional search, similar to Bing AI but with its own unique twists. 🔄

🔬🍔 Lab-grown meat may not be the eco-friendly solution we thought! A new report from UC Davis suggests that cultured meat has a much larger carbon footprint than retail beef.

🐄 The study found that the environmental impact of lab-grown meat could be “orders of magnitude” higher than traditional beef.

💨 The challenge lies in the purification of growth media used in the process, which increases resource usage and contributes to global warming.

⚠️ In fact, the global warming potential of lab-based meat using these purified media can be four to 25 times greater than retail beef.

🌱 While cultured meat could potentially improve its environmental impact in the future, significant technical advancements are needed to reduce costs and improve performance.

🌍 Interestingly, even the most efficient beef production systems outperformed cultured meat in terms of emissions.

🌿💨 Investing in climate-friendly beef production might be a quicker path to reducing emissions than focusing solely on lab-grown alternatives. 🐮💪

Breakthroughs Today

🧠 Making memories. But wait — how exactly? Well, new research suggests that memory may be located in the membranes of neurons , specifically in the lipid bilayer. Exposing a model of a simple lipid bilayer to electrical stimulation triggered long-term changes similar to those observed in the brain, even without neuronal proteins. Understanding memory storage in the brain could revolutionize our knowledge of learning, guide the development of therapies for neurological conditions, and inspire advancements in neuromorphic computing.

Food For Thought

In 1929, a German newspaper featured influential figures labeled as “legends,” including Woodrow Wilson, Vladimir Lenin, Mahatma Gandhi, and a lesser-known poet named Stefan George. George, known as “Master” to his followers, captivated Germans with his poetry during a time of postwar trauma and societal disillusionment. Despite his enigmatic personal life, George attracted a devoted following who saw him as more than human, preaching an alternate reality and envisioning a future Germany inspired by its past. NOEMA is exploring the concept of charisma as described by Max Weber, who encountered George and studied the power of charismatic individuals throughout history. Weber believed that charisma arises in times of crisis, when people seek salvation and redemption in extraordinary individuals who challenge established norms. George’s influence extended to influential figures like Walter Benjamin, Bertolt Brecht, and Max Weber himself. While charismatic power is often short-lived and unstable, it can leave a lasting legacy and shape the course of history. Today, the word charisma continues to be used widely and has even found its way into multiple languages , signifying a belief in the extraordinary influence of individuals. The allure of charisma remains captivating yet mysterious, evoking both fascination and caution.
