What to do when you have too many ideas
When you’ve got too many ideas and don’t know what to work on next: begin to clear your mind.
The brain dump is a powerful tool. Giving yourself an opportunity to just put it out there to clean up later can be a means to refresh and release the tenseness and inability to concentrate.
It can be a struggle to keep going after that point, of course. Conceptualizing is my favorite part of the process, which means it can be difficult to follow up after I’ve become to craft an idea. Bringing it to life is more difficult to me than coming up with the concepts.
That being said, it’s important to figure out what to do with the ideas as they’re coming to us. Most importantly, we gotta do something with the feeling we’re being pulled every way at once.
We, as creatives, tend to hoard information. We like collecting facts and stories and we always love a good conversation with friends or strangers. We also like sharing our thoughts (and would rather not keep it inside us), but when we’re constantly surrounded by ideas, it becomes hard for us to focus on one.
We might try to just list what’s in our head and maybe delete or defer something for later (something that can easily become another thing), but when it gets too busy in there, the best way to calm down is to do nothing much at all.
