Should you revise your past work?
There’s Da Vinci’s saying that art is never finished, only abandoned.
There are some cases where that’s true, but for the most part it is best to have a finished product to hold up as your flagship piece. Sometimes you work on something, and wonder to yourself “Is this good enough?” Maybe it needs more finishing touches, or maybe it just isn’t what you want out of your work anymore?
I used to have a problem with redoing my work, and the reason why was because I would never get it done. In doing so, I increased the time between getting feedback from others on how they felt about my artwork. Another thought that crossed my mind was that maybe I wouldn’t be able to better myself or improve upon something that was already finished.
I eventually learned from my mistakes, and have been able to get a lot more work done between revisions, which has helped me improve overall. In fact, it’s been so beneficial to my workflow that I can’t go back to revising large sections of artwork after completing a piece. These are really some thoughts that apply not only specific to art, but to just about everything in life.
